In late 1977, the house was burglarized while Accardo and his wife were wintering near Palm Springs, California. He was known as a brutal enforcer for the mob, who had allegedly brutally killed gangsters with baseball bats and had ordered the execution of criminals who had the misfortune of robbing his house. Accardo then became boss of the Outfit. Accardo was an enforcer for Al Capone and Frank Nitti. Accardo, who spent his final years in Barrington Hills, was acquitted and denied any mob activity.
